Are you new to yoga or yoga classes?

What is yoga?

The term yoga comes from an ancient philosophy used to attain spiritual insight and harmony, but generally refers in common use to a system of exercises that is practiced as part of this discipline. The word itself is derived from the Sanskrit "yeung", meaning to join.  Often, it is translated "to yoke".  We practice yoga to join the body, breath, mind and spirit.

What are the benefits of yoga?

The benefits of yoga can be different for different people.  The most common benefits yoga students experience include pain and stress relief, lengthening tightened muscles, balance, strength, improved sleep and mental focus, new mind/body connection and improved overall health and vitality.

How do I begin?

The best way to begin is to just come!  Check out the class descriptions and schedule to find a class type and time that works for you and come to the studio to join the class.  If you are unsure, please email or call us for help in selecting the best class for you.

What are the instructor qualifications?

All Studio Be instructors are certified yoga instructors at either the 200 hour or 500 hour level.  Many teachers have further speciality training for supporting specific student needs such as pain management, pregnancy, kids and seniors.

How do I know if the classes are safe?

The best way to know that a class is safe is to find out the qualifications, training and experience of the instructor you will be working with in class and/or individually.  We believe it is important that you develop a relationship with a teacher who will learn about you and how your body works to best support you in sustainable change.  If you have a particular concern, such as a previous injury or condition, please contact us so that we may guide you to the most appropriate class and teacher.

How many classes should I take?

Many people enjoy taking two or even three classes per week.  Two seems to be the optimum for experiencing the benefits of yoga early on.  Some of us can only fit one class per week into our busy lives.  The number of classes you take has to work with your schedule and lifestyle.  There is no right or wrong answer to this question, except maybe, not to come at all!

How do I choose the right class?

We spend time developing clear and accurate class descriptions for our classes.  We hope that these descriptions will help you to begin your journey.  Once you are attending classes, your instructor may suggest other classes for you to try and explore.  We are always happy to help personally to find the best fit.  Contact us at any time.

What if I am not very flexible?

Flexibility does not come easily to most people.  Those who are very flexible often benefit from strengthening work.  The point is that almost everyone has something that they would like to work on.  It is a misunderstanding that you have to be flexible to do yoga or that flexibility is all that yoga is about.  We work on many levels: the body, the breath, the mind and the spirit all come into play in every class.  We'll meet you where you are (even it you can't touch your toes) and see where we go from there!

What if I have pain or a previous injury?

It is always appropriate to talk to us about any existing physical conditions and concerns you have about them.  Yoga does help many people with chronic pain by helping the body regain its balance between strength and flexibility, movement and awareness.  If you are under a doctor's care for an acute situation, please be sure you discuss taking yoga classes with him or her.  In some cases, it is more appropriate to work one on one with a teacher at the beginning.
